Kundan work is traditional Indian gemstone jewelry from Jaipur, Rajasthan. Its origins are traced back to the Mughal times- a time that was simultaneously about continuous warfare and prosperity. That explains the evolution and expansion of the jewelry industry in Rajasthan, especially the Kundan Meena Jewelry.
The base is 24 carat pure gold, silver used in the exceptions of Bihar and Punjab. A hyper purified 24 carat gold leaf foil is inverted longitudinally in the space between the stones and the mount ( chapdi, pavilion wall) and a flush is created to set the precious and semi-precious stones such as diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires. So, when the base gold sheet ( patra) and side walls ( jae) are ready in desired shape and design, they are soldered all together to get a shape of the desired jewelry.

Then, a silver or gold colored fold is placed below the stone to enable reflection of light through the stone, thus increasing the intensity and brilliance of the stone`s color. The various precious and semi precious stones are agate, garnet, emerald, topaz, amethyst, jade, rock crystal, spinel, uncut diamonds, sapphires etc. The motifs are all nature inspired- birds, flowers, vegetation, etc.
